After the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, HBO will air a documentary about the making of it called The Last Watch.

The two-hour feature will debut on May 26, a week after the final episode of the series is shown and promises to delve “deep into the mud and blood to reveal the tears and triumphs involved in the challenge of bringing the fantasy world of Westeros to life in the very real studios, fields and car-parks of Northern Ireland.”
It also calls the final season of the show the “most ambitious and complicated,” which would certainly live up to the hype swirling around its highly anticipated movie-length episodes.
According to HBO, which is referring to the doco as more of a feature film, The Last Watch is being touted as “a funny, heartbreaking story, told with wit and intimacy, about the bittersweet pleasures of what it means to create a world – and then have to say goodbye to it.”
You can also expect to see much of the production shitfight involved with making the final season, including rough deadlines, extreme weather, and the franchise’s crazy fanbase.
In the US, the doco will be made available on HBO, HBO Now, HBO GO and HBO On Demand, but it’s not certain how it’ll be accessed here in Australia given we have literally none of those. Because Foxtel has the rights to Game of Thrones, I’d wager it’ll likely air on there like the rest of the series.
Game of Thrones executive producers David Benioff, Bernadette Caulfield, and D.B. Weiss worked on the project, along with director, Jeanie Finlay, and producers, Rachel Hooper and Martin Mahon.
It’s sure to be a wild ride after the wildest ride of season eight. Bring it on.
