The poetic and plot-thin but gripping trailer for award winning Australian filmmaker David Michod’s Western-inspired Animal Kingdom followup, The Rover, has landed in a combustible wreck of dust, dirt and debris to remind us just how refreshing it will be to see Robert Pattinson’s luminous wonder torso caked in grime and turned into an emaciated harbinger of the near-future desert apocalypse. Twilight this is not.
The film, written and directed by Michod, from an idea conceived in conjunction with Joel Edgerton, also stars Guy Pearce (Memento, LA Confidential, Prometheus), Scoot McNairy (Killing Them Softly, Argo), Gillian Jones (Oscar and Lucinda, The Tree), and previous Animal Kingdom players Anthony Hayes and Susan Prior.
The film is set in a dystopian near-future and follows Pearce’s Eric who hunts the gang of criminals who stole his car and possessions. Along the way he enlists the help of Rey (Pattinson) a “naive and injured” member of the gang who was left behind.
