With all eyes on Westeros, HBO would like to remind us that death, supernatural creatures and nudity have been in their wheelhouse for years now over at their other niche genre juggernaut, True Blood. The supernatural drama series returns in June and the first look at the new season – their first without Oscar winning creator/showrunner Alan Ball (read our interview with him here) – suggests a similar stylistic/narrative approach to the one Ball first forged all those years ago.
Clear and present danger, screaming, plot points which require shirts to be ripped off, terrifying blood faces, characters oscillating between good and evil, more torsos, and an increasingly annoying Bill/Sookie/Eric love triangle destined to recalibrate itself forever until at least one of them – or the show – meets the true death.
The season six premiere, directed by Stephen Moyer, will air on June 16th on HBO.
