WATCH: Pls Suffer With Us Through Straya’s Most Awkward NYE Countdown

Australia has a long and illustrious history of providing hilariously second-rate New Year’s Eve content on the channels that haven’t managed to nab the official coverage of the Sydney fireworks, which is really the only reason people are putting down their mimosas and turning on the telly.

Clarification: even the official party broadcast has invited controversy. On NYE 2006, when Channel Ten had been handed the torch from usual bearers Nine, Matthew Newton drunkenly simulated a blowie on host John Foreman in front of a live audience of millions. Nobody enjoyed it.
But now we’ve got another solid entry in the annals of Australian NYE history. The Loop, apparently a music show that’s been running on Ten stablemate Eleven for four years, held its own NYE broadcast. As part of that broadcast, they brought up a bunch of ‘competition winners’ to participate in the countdown.
What follows is truly magical:
I can only speculate on what’s going on here. Either those people aren’t actually competition winners but actually just aggrieved The Loop staffers, or they actually are competition winners who just spent their NYE sweating in a green room waiting to come on telly for ten seconds. Either way, they are not pleased.
Either way, the true hero is that husky bloke at the end who goes in for simultaneously hugging host Olivia Phyland and getting the hell off the stage.
Happy new year, folks.
