Vanessa Hudgens Signs On As ‘Powerless’ Office Worker For DC Comics Pilot

We are fully aware that popular culture is buckling under the weight of superhero content, and it’s no surprise that Deadpool – the comic character most adept at wink-and-a-nod shitstirring – is cleaning up at the box office.

He’s not exactly the straight man though, ’cause Wade Wilson is very much still in on the joke. Hell, he is the joke.

What the world has been missing, all this time, is a look into the lives of the bums who form the supporting cast. What happens when they’re not dodging rubble, hanging precariously from cable cars, or being randomly disintegrated?

More importantly, who foots the bill afterwards?

Vanessa Hudgens is gonna find out, ’cause she’s been signed on to the pilot of Powerless, a sitcom that finds itself smack-bang in the middle of the DC Comic Universe on NBC.

Her special talent? Well, unless you rank actuarial skills among flight or lazer eyes, her role in an ordinary American insurance firm will be positively boring. Paradoxically, that’s what makes the concept so exciting.

Variety reports she’ll be taking the lead as Emily Locke, who just wants to get her bloody job done without the interference of, ya know, the Flash, Supergirl, Arrow or any of the other DC heroes smattered around their televised realm.

Imagine the Parks & Rec crew paying out after a skyscraper gets punched down, or Michael Scott & Co. trying to file a claim on an invisible jet. That’s the world we can hope for, and director Michael Patrick Jann – previously of Reno 911, Community and Flight Of The Conchords – will be helming the pilot.

It’s about time we recognised the real heroes here – those brave, nameless cubicle-bound warriors who fix everyone else’s mess.
