Toni Collette and director PJ Hogan made beautiful music together (specifically the music of ABBA) in the incredible Muriel’s Wedding, and now the pair have teamed up again in Mental. Mental is an Australian movie about a family with the kind of grotesque dysfunction that was at the core of Muriel’s.
When matriarch Rebecca Gibney has a psychological meltdown – the latest in what is inferred to be a semi regular occurrence – Dad (Anthony LaPaglia) needs to find someone to help out with his five daughters. Enter Shaz (Collette) a salt-of-the-earth straight talking bohemian who will undoubtedly prove wiser than her slightly “mental” exterior. Also stars Liev Schreiber doing an impressive Australian accent in his role as a scarred Alby Mangels type.
