Antoine Fuqua‘s Southpaw was originally supposed to star Eminem, and based on the below trailer, it’s not that difficult to see him slotting into the role of a down-and-out boxer finding redemption.
He didn’t end up taking the part, but contributed a new track, ‘Phenomenal’, to the soundtrack. Jake Gyllenhaal took the lead, and as you’ll see, he got chiselled as all fuck for the part.
Gyllenhaal plays a boxer named Billy Hope (Billy Gets-His-Shit-Together-In-Act-Three might have been a bit too on-the-nose) trying to rebuild his life and career after a family tragedy.
