In the early hours of this morning, our girl Sophie Monk took to Instagram to drive a dagger through the heart of the entire nation, announcing that she and her partner Stu Laundy have officially split up.
There was some speculation as to whether their relationship, forged in the crucible of reality TV, was ever actually real in the first place, although both maintained that it wasn’t just for the cameras.
After their season of The Bachelorette wrapped up, the new couple embarked upon a highly awkward media tour, which included an a grilling from The Project host Meshel Laurie.
“I think you’ve done the classic woman thing where you say that you want one thing but what you actually go for is something else,” Laurie said to a very uncomfortable Sophie Monk as Stu looked on.
After the interview, radio host Kate Langbroek further stirred the pot by posting a photo of the couple to Instagram with the caption “she hates him.”
In her post overnight, Monk said:
I don’t know how to explain this because it’s an unusual circumstance to be in … But because I entered this relationship so publicly I owe an answer to Australia about my personal life. I went into this experience looking to settle down and start a family. I gave it the best shot I could and my intentions were everything I said I was looking for, but unfortunately it just didn’t work out.
As much as I respect him we are just very different people. There were no contracts or pressure to stay together whatsoever from anyone and we remain friends. The positive in this whole experience is that it taught me to jump out of my comfort zone in order to find real love and made me much stronger. I sincerely want to apologise to anyone who invested so much love and support and I hope I haven’t disappointed anyone.

As we speak, Bachelorette runner-up Jarrod Woodgate may or may not be giving the “it’s not you, it’ me” talk to rumoured girlfriend Keira Maguire in order to take another crack at Sophie Monk.
