Shania Twain is on her first press tour in 15 years, and has marked the occasion by assuring fans that she would have voted for noted pathological liar Donald Trump.
“I would have voted for him because, even though he was offensive, he seemed honest,” she told The Guardian. “Do you want straight or polite? Not that you shouldn’t be able to have both. If I were voting, I just don’t want bullshit. I would have voted for a feeling that it was transparent. And politics has a reputation of not being that, right?”
It was a weird, dark and final note in an interview that covered Twain’s traumatic and abusive childhood, health scares that almost nixed her career, her divorce from music partner Robert John “Mutt” Lange, and relationship with friend / ex-husband of the woman her ex-husband had an affair with, Frédéric Thiébaud.
The news that Twain, a Canadian, is a Trump-supporter came as a shock to most, given that she’s long-embraced her status as queer icon (she was recently even a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race) and describes herself as a feminist.
Congratulations to everyone celebrating #equality today in the U.S. #loveislove

Country music might be largely Republican territory, but Shania Twain’s monster success crossed over from country and into the mainstream (The Guardian even makes the bold claim that “without Shania Twain, there might well have been no Taylor Swift“).
Fans are absolutely not impressed (much), and probably life would be a lot easier if we were just allowed to enjoy Shania Twain in peace without knowing she would’ve voted for Trump because he seemed “honest”.

Sure we know who Shania Twain would’ve voted for, but I’m waiting to hear from other Canadian singers I haven’t thought about in 15 years before forming my opinion about an election that happened over a year ago.

My world is shattered…
In this article, my hero and inspiration, Shania Twain says had she been able to vote in 2016, she would have voted for Donald Trump. https://t.co/zNmdmOLdNW

2. It’s unclear what @ShaniaTwain‘s motivation for saying this was. Her arena tour this summer is far from sold-out but it’s not like she took a hard stance on Trump..cheering him on etc. So she hasn’t excited his supporters and she’s totally pissed off his detractors.

Welp, starting to rethink my initial plan to let Shania Twain guide all of my political, socioeconomic and spiritual beliefs

Saw that Shania Twain was trending and my first thought was:
Oh, no. She dead.
Then I saw what she said and then I thought:
Oh, no. She dead.

You can read her full interview in The Guardian here.
UPDATE: Welp, that was fast she – she’s already apologised, calling her comments “awkward”.
