British actor Bob Hoskins, who appeared in films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Hook and Mona Lisa, has died of pneumonia at 71.
He passed away just two years after retiring from acting, after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Hoskins won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar in 1986 for Mona Lisa, in which he appeared alongside Michael Caine and Robbie Coltrane. He’s also responsible for bringing Mario to the silver screen in 1993’s Super Mario Bros., a film described by industry magazine Empire as “Game over, man”, and by Bob Hoskins himself as his “biggest disappointment” and the “worst job he’s ever done”.
A number of fellow actors have paid tribute on Twitter since news of his death broke:
Oh no, Bob Hoskins. Gone? That’s awful news. The Long Good Friday one of the best British movies of the modern era. A marvellous man.

A huge loss today. Bob Hoskins. One of my great inspirations was his performance in Mona Lisa, particularly the last scene. A true great!!
