To paraphrase topical Hollywood scion Ronan Farrow: if the People’s Choice Awards are a direct democracy and the Golden Globes are a junta, then the Academy Awards are an aristocracy wherein the ruling class gather round in their finery each year, reach in and – after a lot of exhausting back and forth, or ‘campaigning’ – appoint a victor in the technicolour cinematic circle jerk that is the Oscars.
I love it, and – if you aren’t too seriously self-righteous in your viewing tastes – chances are so do you; presumably that’s why you’re here.
Voting each year in the Oscars is restricted to some 6,000 active and life Academy members whose viewing tastes dictate what’s merely good and what’s best based on tenuous factors – the least of which is probably merit – in an already entirely subjective medium. It’s a crazy world! That’s why we’d like to turn the banquet tables around and invite you to submit your picks for the best in film from this morning’s Oscar noms in each of the following major categories.
