Obama Calls Up Rudd and Gillard From Air Force One

President of the United States Barack Obama has phoned in calls from Air Force One to the two leaders who just won’t give the leadership contest a rest, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and former Prime Minister Julia Gillard

The phone calls were spurred by last week’s monumental hiccup that was the #spill, resulting in a recycled Prime Minister, a significant handful of Labor frontbenchers calling it quits, and journalists rushing to defend Ms Gillard—relaying kind words about our first female PM for the first time since her leadership coup in 2010. It’s way too late, you guys.

A statement from the White House reports that Obama “congratulated the Prime Minister on his return to office. The President also reiterated the enduring strength of the U.S.-Australia alliance and his confidence that the United States and Australia will continue to work together closely on important global and regional issues.”

In his call to Julia Gillard, President Obama reportedly “thanked her for her warm friendship and close partnership in deepening cooperation between the United States and Australia, and he wished her well in her future endeavors.

The call comes after the recent reveal that Prime Minister Rudd has been racking up a phone bill that dwarfs that time I “accidentally” started downloading 1080p copies of every Game of Thrones episode on my phone (nope, turns out my mobile data doesn’t cut out when I reach my limit; it just proceeds to absorb precious gold at each megabyte thereafter), with a bill of $29 676 in six months, news.com.au reports. For fuck’s sake, Kevin, I thought someone told you to stop snapchatting your entire address book while you’re on global roaming. Cool it until we lock in that NBN, bud.

We can also—sadly, bitterly—confirm that Mr Rudd and Ms Gillard are still eagerly awaiting their respective congratulations/condolences in a text from Hillary.
