All things considered, it is extremely unclassy to be so gleeful about another person’s breakup, but here we are reporting and here you are reading it.
We are of course talking about pop diva Mariah Carey and billionaire James Packer.
News of their split broke late last week, and while details are scarce – and entirely depends on which rag you’re reading – we do have confirmation from Mariah’s camp that the couple had a fight in Greece and have not seen each other since.
Now sources close to Mariah are claiming that she’s blaming the relationship breakdown on Packer’s links to Scientology, saying that his business manager (and former Scientology spokesperson) Tommy Davis is controlling him.
“Mariah and James were looking at homes in Beverly Hills to buy together in August, everything was fine, he was saying she was his soulmate, and he couldn’t wait to marry her,” the source told Page Six. “Then suddenly he changed. In September, James suddenly seemed not like himself at all. Mariah is suspicious of Tommy, who has been managing James’ finances, and she suspects he is controlling him.”
Packer began attending the Church of Scientology in 2002 after striking up a friendship with (who else?) Tom Cruise, but reportedly abandoned it in 2008.
“His relationship with Mariah ended because she is a diva, she has an entourage around her, and she’s filming a TV show, which is a crazy world that James doesn’t want to be involved with.”
The main takeaway here is that both sources are claiming the fight is about Carey’s spending habits, something the official statement from her camp has already denied. It’s just that sources close to Carey say Scientology is fuelling these claims, while sources close to Packer reckon it’s just good business.
