James Packer Has Finally Spilled His Guts On The Mariah Carey Breakup Sitch

In a rare and lengthy interview with The Australian, James Packer has opened up on his personal and professional turmoils over the last few years, including his decision to sell his stake in the RatPac production company, and his breakup with diva Mariah Carey.

He told the publication that in 2015, he found himself in the midst of a debt crisis, having to borrow large sums of money to stave off a potential legal battle with sister Gretel Packer, and facing various setbacks related to the expansion of crown resorts. He said:

“Two years ago I was terrified. I had $2.3 billion of debt at CPH [Consolidated Press Holdings, his private company], over $3 billion of debt at Crown, I’d just appointed Rob [Rankin as chairman of Crown], Macau was falling over and [sister] Gretel was on my doorstep. Then, a year later, I’ve got China falling apart, the Australian casino businesses missing budgets by big amounts, I’ve got Mariah breaking up with me and I’m thinking, ‘fuck!’”

James Packer met Mariah Carey through Mutual friend Brett Ratner, and after a whirlwind courtship that kept the entire Australian media in a state of rapt hysteria, the pair announced their engagement, with a dream wedding set to take place in Bora Bora in March of 2016.

Sadly, it was not to be, and the pair went their separate ways. While they never spoke about the dissolution of their engagement, details of an alleged prenuptial agreement leaked last year, containing wild clauses about private jets, expensive jewelry gifts and a rumoured $30 million settlement.

Packer did not comment on the terms of the alleged agreement to The Australian, although it was noted that the agreement itself was “unrelated” to the reasons for their split. He spoke in slightly more broad terms about his decision to get involved with Mariah in the first place, saying:

“The answer is complicated … I was at a low point in my personal life. Documenting the negotiations with my sister was taking longer than expected. Brett Ratner put Mariah and me together. She was kind, exciting and fun. Mariah is a woman of substance. She is very bright. But it was a mistake for her and a mistake for me.”

Mariah has been slightly less diplomatic on her relationship with Packer, straight-up calling him a “motherfucker” in an interview with an Israeli journalist during her press tour there earlier this year.

There was also the time she casually torched what may have been her $250k wedding dress in a music video. Mariah does not forgive, and she does not forget:
