The Legally Blonde Writer Has Called Bullshit On That Alternate Ending That’s Going Viral

There’s a spicy rumour going around that iconique noughties flick Legally Blonde had a bunch of alternate endings, including a lesbian scene.

According to Jessica Cauffiel, who played Elle Woods’ (Reese Witherspoon) sorority sis Margot, the flick almost ended with Elle getting with her rival-turned-mate, Vivian Kensington (Selma Blair).

“The first ending was Elle and Vivian in Hawaii in beach chairs, drinking margaritas and holding hands,” Cauffiel recently told The New York Times in celebration of the film’s 20th anniversary. “The insinuation was either they were best friends or they had gotten together romantically.”

Actress Alanna Ubach (who plays Serena) concurred with this theory, but the Legally Blonde screenwriters told the publication that no such scene ever existed in any iterations of the film, which, not gonna lie, is a bit of a let-down.

After fans lost their shit at the prospect of the legendary flick having a lesbian ending in an alternate universe, Karen McCullah, who wrote the movie, dispelled the rumour.

“I wrote the movie. Im in the picture you just posted. The actress quoted was incorrect,” she responded to one tweet.

“This rumour is untrue so don’t be enraged,” she wrote on another.

Karen McCullah did confirm that there were several other alternate endings, including one where the cast broke out into a musical number, foreshadowing its 2007 Legally Blonde Broadway adaptation.

“As Elle came out, the judge, jury and everybody in the courtroom broke into song and dance,” she said. “I’ve been waiting for somebody to leak that for 20 years.”

In another Legally Blonde ending, McCullah said there was a fast-forward where we see Vivian go blonde and start the ‘Blond Legal Defense Club’ with Elle the next year at their Harvard Law School graduation. Bless!

Meanwhile Legally Blonde 3, which was written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor, is set to be released in cinemas on May 2022.
