We might’ve tried to take his dogs, but there’s not an Environment Minister on the planet that can take Johnny Depp‘s talent away from him.
Nor can anyone take his willingness to commit to a character, which is frankly at world-class levels – and has been for years.
Case in point: a gaunt-looking Depp gets himself decked out in all the prosthetics to step into the shoes of notorious criminal Whitey Bulger – a real-life ringleader of organised crime whose relationship with the FBI saw his operations largely go ignored during his heyday. When law enforcement finally turned to prosecute him, Bulger went on the run – managing to stay in hiding for 16 years, 12 of which saw him behind only Osama Bin Laden on the FBI’s Most Wanted list.
The incredible story of Bulger and the FBI is being spun into Black Mass, the trailer for which has dropped this morning.
Centring around real-life events, Black Mass follows Whitey – whose brother was a highly regarded Massachusetts state senator – and his violent criminal operations in the late 1970s and 1980s.
Depp’s physical transformation is stunning, and the trailer is violent and ominous as all hell.
Black Mass also stars Joel Edgerton, Brandakirk Crumblespatch, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Jesse Plemons, and Peter Sarsgaard.
Scott Cooper, who previous wrote and directed the Jeff Bridges-Oscar winning film Crazy Heart, serves as director.
Black Mass will hit cinemas this coming September.
