Love or hate the Game of Thrones finale, Gwendoline Christie absolutely killed it as Ser Brienne of Tarth, one of the few characters with a rare (mostly) happy ending. Christie deservedly received an Emmy nod for her performance as the knight, but as we later learned, the actor actually nominated herself for the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series nomination, because HBO rudely didn’t.
HBO nominated Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), and Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) for the category, which is fair, but still.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the absolute queen revealed she hadn’t told anyone – save for her partner – about her self-nom. Truth be told, she braced herself for disappointment. But Christie just had to put her name forward, she deserved it and Brienne bloody deserved it.
“When I read the script for the final season, I was delighted that Brienne had such a full storyline,” she told THR. “I remember talking about it with my team and saying, ‘I feel like I just want to do it for me, for the character.'”
Not to mention, she forked out her own USD$225 for the self-entry fee.
Christie said she absolutely lost it when she got the phone call.
“Let me tell you, I experienced every single emotion known to man,” she shared. “I spoke with them again 15 minutes later and said, ‘It’s not a mistake, is it?’ Because I just could not believe it. It means a huge, huge amount to me, and HBO has been very supportive as a consequence of the wonderful nomination.”
Christie also shared the sweetest Instagram post of all the congratulatory messages she received from fans, complete with a doll of Jamie Lannister who I’m still unbelievably mad at.
“THANK YOU! You make me want to cry! I am so moved by your messages!!” Christie captioned the post.
The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on September 23.
To conclude: BACK YOURSELF.
