The ‘Game Of Thrones’ Twitter Account Emerged From Its Slumber With Cryptic Tweet

Game of Thrones has been off our screens (and out of our minds) for six months now, but this morning the official Twitter account awoke from its slumber and sent fans into a tizzy with three words:

Obviously, we need hardly explain to any of you that “winter is coming” was both the House Stark words and a Game of Thrones tagline. The thing is – winter came. (Ooh-er.) Seasons 7 and 8 took place in winter. The supposedly ‘long’ night lasted a couple hours max, but it still somehow counts. Winter came and went.

So what, then, does this tweet mean?

Potentially it’s a reference to HBO’s new prequel series, which will take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones as we know it. However, that series – called House of the Dragon, about the glory days of House Targaryen – isn’t slated for release until 2021.

Could it be in response to reports of an alternative-ending to the series, which was ‘revealed’ by Tormund actor Kristofer Hivju, and apparently confirmed by Tommen Baratheon actor Dean-Charles Chapman? Also unlikely – those quotes seem joking at best (and Tommen was dead long before season 8), and every other cast member has spoken out against the season 8 backlash.

Which leaves us to wonder if it’s just a fun tweet about how it’s nearly winter in the norther hemisphere?

Even the huge nerds over at fan site Winter is Coming have no idea.

Some fans are speculating (of course), but for the most part fans are mad they were forced to think about season 8 again.
