Emma Watson Broke Down Hollywood Sexism By Numbers

The ever-outspoken Emma Watson made a huge impression last year when she fronted the #HeForShe campaign against sexism, speaking out in favour of gender equality and braving for the sadly inevitable social media shitstorm that followed.
This week, she has spoken out again, giving her views on Hollywood sexism in an interview with The Guardian, as part of a series of interviews with actresses, directors and screenwriters about the gender balance in the film industry.
When asked for her thoughts on gender representation in the film industry, she painted a picture by the numbers, saying:
“I have experienced sexism in that I have been directed by male directors 17 times and only twice by women. Of the producers I’ve worked with 13 have been male and only one has been a woman.”

That said, Watson added that “I have always insisted on being treated equally and have generally own that equality. Most of the problems I have encountered have been in the media, where I have been treated so incredibly differently from my male co-stars.”
Earlier this year, Cosmopolitan UK flipped the script on Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson to prove a point on the media’s treatment of women, asking Ruffalo mindless questions about red carpet outfits, and Johansson about Avengers stunts.
Watson added that:
“If something does go wrong in the workplace, the support network is not brilliant. The men at the top often find it difficult to relate to a lot of the problems women face and therefore we aren’t taken very seriously. Yet, women are just as guilty of discriminating against women.”
