The trend of rebooting shit from the late 90s/early 2000s – because it’s old now, officially – is in full swing. The next cab off the rank is classic Young Sexy Witch Drama Charmed – the show popularised by original witches Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, Shannen Doherty and Rose McGowan.
Various iterations of a Charmed reboot have been in the works for yonks, but have never quite gotten off the ground. Now, CW is pulling this one out of the reboot heap. Studios are turning to reboots of proven franchises to achieve some cut-through in an era where there are about one billion new scripts being turned into telly every damn day.
The reboot is a total shift in concept, it’s now set in 1976, and follows three witches – shockingly – who come together to fight the forces of evil (and fight for women’s rights too, apparently) in a New England town in 1976.
Little other info is known, other than the fact the show’s original stars have at various points expressed some reservation about a Charmed reboot. Some people theorise it might actually be a prequel, even though CW say its a ‘reimagining’. We’ll have to hold tight and work it out when it comes.
