Christina Aguilera‘s freckles adorn PAPER magazine’s latest cover, serving the issue’s transformation theme with a naturalistic look rarely seen from the pop juggernaut.
Speaking at length about the personal, professional, and aesthetic transformations she has made across her decades-long career, Aguilera said “I need movement, I need to go explore, be an artist, create and transform.”
Aguilera also noted her current look’s difference from the Xtina of yore – two-tone braids, chaps, and all – by saying “I’m at the place, even musically, where it’s a liberating feeling to be able to strip it all back and appreciate who you are and your raw beauty.”
That brand of self-respect is reflected in how she hopes her kids view themselves. After discussing the instant call-and-response of social media, Aguilera said “I really want to make sure my children are both very confident in the sense that they know who they are and that they won’t be easily swayed by outside opinion.”
