Cate Blanchett To Direct New Aussie TV Series “Stateless,” Based On Cornelia Rau

“Our” Cate Blanchett is making a serious push into directing nowadays.

With a planned feature already in the works – a project called “The Dinner,” taken from a script written by “I’m Not There” co-scribe Oren Moverman – Blanchett is set to continue her push for a career behind the lens by returning to her roots and taking visual control over a new Australian “high end” TV series.
Screen Australia has announced that the project, entitled “Stateless,” will receive their financial backing from their latest round of funding.
The series revolves around the true story of Cornelia Rau and her 10 month ordeal being illegally held in Australian detention centres.
Rau, a German born Australian permanent resident, made headlines in 2004 when it was revealed that she had spent months on end being held in the notorious Baxter Immigration Detention Centre following a series of misunderstandings and Government officials’ failure to both properly ascertain her identity and nationality, as well as her severe mental health issues.
Blanchett will develop and direct the series, which in this early stage of development has not yet found a broadcasting home.
But with Blanchett’s name attached – and the intriguing story material – that seems but a mere matter of time.
