And The Golden Globes Nominees Are…

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. No, not Christmas – AWARDS SEASON! The best looking people on earth wearing expensive clothes holding gold statuettes and thanking baby Jesus and their agents… Watching it all unfold on tv is like gorgeous, escapist porn for celebrity obsessives. But let’s not forget that awards season is also about recognising the finest work from the year in entertainment. The 2011 Golden Globe nominations have just been unveiled so let’s take a look at the breakdown…

Aussies represent: Guy Pearce is the lone Australian in the fold this year, nominated in the Supporting Actor, TV-Movie or Miniseries cateogry. He was tanned perfection in Todd Haynes’ fabulous HBO melodrama Mildred Pierce; but – in addition to looking spectacular – his nuanced, charismatic performance as playboy Monty Beragon was a standout amidst a role call of stellar talent, including Kate Winslet and Evan Rachel Wood – both of whom are also nominated for their work in the show.

Best Looking Actor: Damn y’all. The Best Actor, Drama category has never looked so good. It basically comprises the same lineup as a People Magazine ‘Sexiest’ list: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Fassbender and the breakout dreamboat of 2011 Ryan Gosling.

Twice the Gosling: Ryan Gosling has double the chance of holding Globes after receiving nods in both the Best Actor, Drama category (for The Ides of March) AND Best Actor, Comedy (Crazy, Stupid, Love). I’d hold his Globes any day of the week if you catch my drift (GENITALS).

Award Winning Females: In both major acting categories for the women, the nominations have been dominated by oft-awarded individuals like Meryl Streep, Tilda Swinton, Kate Winslet, Charlize Theron, Michelle Williams, Viola Davis and Jodie Foster. All these women deliver consistently brilliant performances time and time again. Ladies represent.

Female First-timers: Rooney Mara has received her first nomination for her debut leading part as the titular heroine in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo – cause to be even more excited about the movie’s pending Australian release. It’s also great to see Kristen Wiig get recognised for her spectacularly shameless performance in Bridesmaids – which has received a nomination for Best Picture, Comedy.
