Adam Pally Of ‘Happy Endings’ Explains His Messy Shorty Awards Monologue

Earlier this month, comedian and Happy Endings star Adam Pally was a presenter at the Shorty Awards, and while I’m not 100% sure what that is (some kind of social media thing, I think), he caused a stir when he took the everloving piss out of everyone present.

Presenting the award for Best Overall Instagram – again, we’re not 100% sure what that is or why it’s necessary – Pally went rogue, calling the Shortys “the waiting at the DMV of awards shows” and not even bothering to hide his disdain.

Over the course of his speech, he likened the trophy to a “glass vagina”, said that appearing on the show was a lot like being in hell, made fun of people who had won earlier in the night, and told organisers: “If you want me to host next year, hard pass.”

There are no videos of the night online, as the folks behind the award show have apparently scrubbed them all, but Adam Pally’s appearance generated a lot of headlines, as people speculated whether he’d been kicked out, and whether he’d had some kind of breakdown.

Speaking with People this week, the actor set the record straight, insisting that the whole thing was just a big goof, and we all took it way too far:

“My purpose was not to insult – my purpose was to be in jest, and I do feel sorry about that. I won’t apologise because I don’t really think I did anything wrong. I did not want to make anybody feel bad. It’s interesting, you do something like that and it’s really funny and you’re proud of it, but at the same time to be totally honest, it’s kind of a bummer, because a lot of the attention an headlines are negative. I knew what I was doing and I’m proud of what I did but I don’t know if it was worth it – I think probably not.”

When asked why his presentation went viral (in fairness, it’s pretty obvious why), he said:

“It was just like a lightning bolt thing, because of all the corporate stuff – people think I went up there and was like ‘screw the man!’ I was really just talking about the night and trying to do a bit, and I am … I had to tell my grandma that I didn’t get kicked out of an awards show, and that’s not always the best place to be.”

Meanwhile, we are still crossing our fingers that the Happy Endings reunion might one day happen.
