Abbie Cornish Dispels Facebook Death Announcement As Hoax

Your favourite pseudo-serious female emcee Abbie Cornish is not dead, despite a Facebook claiming the Australian actress had departed the physical world.

The star of Somersault, Candy and the upcoming (and presumably incredible) reboot of Robocop only discovered the news of her death on Tuesday, announcing on her personal Facebook page: “Imagine waking up one morning, logging on to the world wide web and discovering that you are dead. At least that’s what happened to one lady hailing from the Hunter this week. The alleged death gathered credence after an ‘‘R.I.P. Abbie Cornish’’ Facebook page popped up later, attracting almost 1million ‘‘likes’’.”

Learning that a stranger is dedicating time to crafting Wikipedia oeuvre eulogies about your false death must be an unnerving experience. Not unnerving? Knowing one million “likers” wanted to bid her well as she shuttled from one life to the next; basically, Abbie Cornish received the gift of being able to live out that particularly grim moment of narcissism when you fantasise about the number of people who mourn your death. Flattered.

The faux death notice read: ‘‘At about 11 a.m. ET on Monday (May 20, 2013), our beloved actress Abbie Cornish passed away … she will be missed but not forgotten.’’

RIP Abbie Cornish death hoax.
