From the fertile loins of The Lion King has sprung a multitude of offspring: a hit Broadway musical, two direct to video spinoffs – sequel The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride and prequel The Lion King 1½ and spin-off series, Timon and Pumbaa.
And now, almost exactly two decades after its release, the latest cub cut from umbilical chord of the Disney film most likely to force a six year old kid to subconsciously confront the mortality of their parents AND learn about the sex through Tim Rice lyrics, is a spinoff TV series called The Lion Guard.
The show will follow Kion, the second-born son of Simba and Nala, who leads a group of Avengers-style misfits called the Lion Guard. Lion King favourites including Timon and Pumbaa, Mufasa (as Cumulonimbus Ghost Mufasa, I guess?), Rafiki, Zazu and Kion’s older sister Kiara will also make appearances, but its main focus will be on the creatures of the Lion Guard, a series of new characters including a “fearless honey badger, a confident cheetah, a happy-go-lucky hippo, and an intellectual egret.”
Only one of which doesn’t give a fuck.
The circle of life and such.
