Yes, lemon, lime & bitters is a true blue Aussie classic.

No, you can’t get tiddly drinking them – no matter what your parents told you as a kid.

Yes, you can get tiddly drinking them if you tinker with the recipe and add some grog.

No, you can’t just chuck lemon and lime in some soda water and call it an LLB you monstrosity of a human. Do you also chuck soy sauce on gravel and call it fried rice? Savages.

Okay, now that we’ve established the ground rules, lemme walk you through my fave LLB recipes, courtesy of Angostura Brand Ambassador Rohan Massie. And before anyone attacks me for not catering to everyone, there’s also low-alcohol, low-sugar and alcoholic recipes.

I’m thoughtful like that.

NON & LOW-ABV BEVS

4-Way Citrus Shrub

Ingredients: 

  • 30ml 4-Way Citrus Shrub
  • 10 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters
  • Top with soda water

Once you’ve got your citrus shrub sorted, you simply whack that combo in a glass full of ice with some soda water and Angostura bitters.

Suited for: when it’s hot as hell and you don’t want to be outside but you want to feel like you’re outside, you feel me?

LLB Float

Ingredients:

  • 20ml lime cordial
  • 15 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters
  • 20ml cream or 1 small scoop of ice cream
  • Top with soda or lemonade depending on your level of indulgence.

Do not, under any circumstances, add ice to this concoction. Or do, I’m not your parent (that I know of). 

Suited for: those days when you’ve done something that you’re not proud of and you want to revert back to your childhood, stat.

ALCOHOLIC BEVS

Angostura Lemon, Lime, Bitters & Rum

Ingredients:

  • 150ml lemonade
  • 15ml fresh lime juice
  • 5 dashes of Angostura aromatic bitters
  • 45ml of Angostura 1919 Premium Rum

Look, if you’re really fancy, you can add a wedge of lime to this cocktail, but don’t sweat the small stuff if your lime supply is running low.

Suited for: the third Thursday night of every second month. Or, y’know, when you’re in the mood for a little pick-me-up. Either works.

The Low Sugar Angostura Soda, Vodka, Lime and Bitters

Ingredients:

  • 150ml Soda Water
  • 15ml fresh lime juice
  • 5 dashes of Angostura orange bitters
  • 45ml of whatever vodka tickles your fancy

I’m by no means a vodka snob, to the point where I only recently found out that my favourite bottle of vodka wasn’t even vodka at all. Carpe Diem etc. But choose your fave, pop the ingredients in an ice-filled glass and you’re golden.

Suited for: when you’re out with friends and you want to look impressive instead of ordering a basic rum and cola.

I hear you, I hear you. If only there was a festival dedicated to mixing these types of mindful drinks, self-care and everything in between.
