Cancel your plans ‘cos if you aren’t already going to this year’s Sydney Mardi Gras then you will now ‘cos Sydney’s first ever Mardi Gras wedding is happening today and everyone’s invited to it.
Following the fab results of the same-sex plebiscite, James Brechney took to one knee and popped the question to his now fiance, Stuart Henshall. Now, planning weddings can be bloody stressful but planning one in three months – well that takes a special kind of power couple. But the grooms have pulled it off and as you can expect, this ain’t no normal wedding. It is the 40th anniversary for the Sydney Mardi Gras, after all.
The couple will take to the parade on a giant $8000, custom-made, white wedding cake float and will be married on the top-most tier for all to bask in the glory of love. You honestly can’t anymore extra than that. And the grooms will tie the knot in gold and purple sequined tuxedos surrounded by their friends and family . #AMAZING
James told The Australian,
“We’re sharing our wedding with over 13,000 people (in the parade) on our favourite night of the year and we’re delighted to now be part of the mardi gras story.”
Joining the couple will be 200 other floats and groups for the parade and in case you haven’t heard, everyone’s currently losing their shit over an appearance by our sass queen and saviour, Cher. Just this morning she posted a pic on Twitter in Sydney and no one was okay.
Have a look at said Tweet – especially the iconic hair:

And now look at how happy people are that Cher’s in town:
Eleven in the morning and the dudes upstairs are blasting Cher’s Believe at a volume that even 25 metres away is unsafe for human ears. Yup, it’s mardi gras weekend.

I woke up last night because a helicopter was flying over my house and in my half asleep state I was like “oh it must be Cher, that’s nice”

A wedding and Cher, it can’t get any better – oh wait- the cast of Orange Is The New Black are attending too. They’ll be up on their own Netflix float with our own Danii Minogue ‘cos why not.
HAPPY MADI GRAS, EVERYONE!
