35 Y.O. Adelaide Man Killed By Lightning Strike In NT On New Year’s Day

An Adelaide man has died after being struck by lightning while hiking in the Northern Territory on New Year’s Day.

9 News is reporting that the man has been identified as 35-year-old Antony Van Der Meer. Van Der Meer was walking with four family members at 5pm on Monday when he was struck by the bolt of lightning. According to The Advertiser, his family attempted CPR but he was pronounced dead at the scene when authorities arrived.

It’s understood that Van Der Meer, who was hiking the Kings Canyon Rim Trail, was carrying a metal tripod at the time that he was struck.

An NT Police spokesperson said that no one else was injured but that the members of his family where who were there “suffered extreme shock.”
