The son who had no choice but to keep us all together Michael Bluth Jason Bateman told EW Radio yesterday that the overarching narrative of season 5 of ‘Arrested Development‘, whose existence was 100% certified back in May, is an effin’ murder mystery – hopefully ‘Clue‘ style.
[SPOILERS AHEAD, but to be frank you deserve it if you still haven’t watched the latest season, it’s been out for four years.]
The mystery revolves around the disappearance of Lucille Two (Liza Minnelli) in season 4.
“The central spine of that story is the death of Liza Minnelli’s character, and a bit of whodunit, who may have done it, who had something to do with it. That’s sort of a central thread around which [creator Mitch Hurwitz] is going to braid in all the colourful plot complications that he knows how to do.”
We know that she made it to Cinco de Cuatro and ran into bb Buster (Tony Hale), who she deliberately kept away from Lucille Bluth (Jessica Walter)’s trial. And we know that Buster was then so distressed that he went apeshit on Herbert Love (Terry Crews) with his robot hand. He was arrested for her murder in the final episode’s post-credits scene.
BUT! It might not be Buster, because he is a sweet bebe and he wouldn’t hurt a fly, okay?
We also know that the new season will feature the full ensemble cast in each episode, a delightful change from last season’s v-clever-but-just-not-as-good plotting where due to scheduling conflicts the focus was on one member of the now-big-name cast at a time.
“We’re all going to be together in all of these episodes. Because of certain limitations we had with actors’ schedules and exclusivities to other shows, and budgetary constraints, [Hurwitz] had to pivot a bit off of that.“And also it was an interesting thing for him to do because he was embracing the interface of Netflix, which was fairly new at the time in original programming, and wanted to be able to basically have you click out of one episode and click into somebody else’s episode and see a different view point on this simultaneous action.“Ultimately, editorially, it didn’t really come together as well as he wanted it to, and then he had to dictate an order of watching, and it ended up being a little bit more complicated than I think one intended. But we’re still very proud of those episodes obviously — and really excited that we get to be together in these.”
According to Bateman, filming on season five starts in just two weeks, so hopefully there’ll be some more tidbits to come before we binge-watch new ‘Arrested Development‘ sometime next year.
