An Irish tourist is in critical condition after a one-punch assault in Sydney’s Kings Cross overnight.
The Sydney Morning Herald report that the unnamed man, on a family holiday in Australia, was punched by his own brother on Bayswater Road in Kings Cross, just after 3am today.
The 32-year-old victim fell and hit his head on the footpath, and was rushed to St Vincent’s hospital for emergency surgery. His 33-year-old brother was arrested at the scene, and taken to Kings Cross police station.
Sydney’s lockout laws, introduced in January 2014 following the deaths of two men in one-punch assaults, were meant to target alcohol-fueled violence, however, Sydney police superintendent Michael Fitzgerald has said that alcohol was “not a factor” in this case.
“This is a family tragedy. This has nothing to with the lockout [laws] or early closing times,” he said. “These are two brothers who got into an argument and tragically… one brother punched the other and caused him to fall to the ground.”
Last week, a 24-year-old NSW central coast man was transferred to Royal North Shore hospital in critical condition after being injured in a one-punch attack outside a pub in Erina.
