If you were sitting here thinking the longest Uber rides were those inevitable New Years Day ones where drunk punters get ferried from the city to far-flung Aussie suburbs at surge pricing of 10000 times the usual rate, you may have a new contender.
Uber driver Janis Rogers drover her passenger a total of 645 kilometres from the U.S. state of Virginia all the way to New York City, according to the New York Post. The company hasn’t actually confirmed whether this is the longest ride on record, but there doesn’t appear to be any existing record of people going for longer.
Ride-sharing blogger Harry Campbell told the Post that this is the longest Uber drive he is personally aware of. Honestly, can’t really imagine one longer that doesn’t involve drug smuggling or murder.
Either way, 645km is a long-ass ride. The price for the nearly eight-hour ride was the, uh, fairly cheap $US294.09. That is obscenely cheap, actually. Rogers says that after petrol, Uber taking its cut, and the rideless trip back, she probably earned about nine bucks an hour all up. Which is absolutely not enough, to be fair.
“This was not lucrative,” she said. “I did it because it was an adventure.”
Apparently, the rider was visiting her boyfriend in NYC, and didn’t actually seem that keen about it. “She didn’t seem excited to see her boyfriend,” she said. “She was kind of blasé. She looked tired.”
Just waiting on someone who do the Sydney – Perth hellride across the Nullarbor in an Uber. It will happen. Some freak will do it.
