Let’s not pretend that most of our favourite Christmas movies aren’t cooked. You’ve got a torture-loving pre-teen in ‘Home Alone’, murderous little freaks in ‘Gremlins‘ and an alcoholic sex addict as the lead in ‘Bad Santa‘, for a start.
But ‘Elf’? ‘Elf’ was supposed to be one of the good ones. Kinda dumb, sure – but the sort of festive flick that you and the fam could whack on after Christmas dinner, seeing you all nicely through the haze of your food comas.
Not anymore, suckers. Cineflix, the YouTube channel of Mashable, has taken the 2003 Christmas comedy and recut the movie as a psychological horror film. No longer a big-hearted yet misguided man called Buddy, Will Ferrell is a trauma victim, having been kidnapped and tortured as a child, then held captive in some kind of hellish snow prison dressed as the North Pole. Here, his captors twisted his mind into believing he was truly an elf. When he finally escapes to find his father, his family must attempt to de-program him, before Buddy’s even darker, more murderous side emerges.
Sleep tight, children.
