Interview: Bra Boys Director And Musician Kid Mac

Kid Mac aka Macario De Souza has a robust work ethic to say the least. He was co-director, cinematographer and editor of Bra Boys: Blood is Thicker than Water, the documentary about the titular surf crew from Sydney’s notorious beach suburb Maroubra, which went on to be Australia’s highest grossing documentary the year of release (2007).

He followed the movie’s success up with a new docu-drama Fighting Fear about the life-altering relationship between pro-surfer Mark Mathews and his best friend, MMA fighter Richie Vaculik. Featuring interviews with Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning and Bruce Iron, and narrated by Joel Edgerton, the movie was released in Australian cinemas on November 10th and you can check out the trailer here.

Kid Mac is a keen surfer himself but his interests extend outside the world of surfing. He has spent the last several months gigging with his four-piece band and touring with the personification of loose, Mickey Avalon, through the US where we caught up with him to talk movie-making, music and what’s coming up.

Kid Mac is launching his latest single “Nobody Sleep, Nobody Get Hurt” at Beach Road Hotel in Bondi this Saturday, 17 December 2011. Buy tickets here and check out the single’s video below featuring guest appearances by Richie Vas and Mark Matthews.
