You’ve Probably Been Pronouncing IKEA Wrong Your Whole Life

IKEA

If you’re ready to experience that unique feeling of what it’s like to be living a lie, keep reading, folks, because we got a doozy for you. It turns out you’ve probably been pronouncing IKEA wrong your whole life.

I mean, you’d think it’d be pretty straight forward, right? IKEA = EYE-KEE-AH. But that’s not it, chief, and Jimmy Kimmel is here prove it to you.

Well, it’s not Kimmel himself, but a recent guest on his show, football player, Zlatan Ibrahimović, who plays for the LA Galaxy. Being Swedish himself, you’d expect him to be pretty clued in on such an iconic Swedish brand like IKEA, so it’s hard not to take his word for it.

Have a watch of the interview right here. You can skip to about 50 seconds in to see the IKEA conversation.

“I didn’t even know that was the right way to pronounce it,” Kimmel says. “I assume you know, it’s EE-KAY-UH.”

That’s right, mates, there’s no “EYE” sound, it’s “EE,” and don’t even get me started on the “KEE” to “KAY” thing. It’s not the first time the company has schooled people on its pronunciation, either. A quick Google search reveals they’ve been doing it for years.

It probably won’t change anything, though. Hell, I’ll probably call it EYE-KEE-AH until I die because old habits die hard and all that.
