Emma Thompson Gave Tony Abbott A Shout Out From Atop A Melting Glacier

Certified screen legend of Pie Eyed At Awards Ceremony fame Emma Thompson and her 14-year-old daughter Gaia (sure, okay) are currently vacationing with their good friends Greenpeace in the Arctic Circle as part of continued efforts to raise awareness and generate support for the protection in perpetuity of the North Pole. It’s from there, atop the melting Smeerenburg glacier, that she’s given a very public S/O to climate change prevention’s most valuable asset
Just kidding, she’s given a shout out to our Prime Minister Tony Abbott in the process of making an impassioned plea for government leaders the world over to address the very real threat of climate change.

In a blog housed on the Greenpeace website transcribed from a speech delivered on the decks of the Esperanza, Thompson advocates living a sustainable life while imploring leaders like Angela Merkel, Barack Obama, François Hollande and Vladimir Putin – who each received their own personalised placard – to “stand up to the dirty industries that have for so long funded and controlled them, and to give us all an affordable chance to live our lives in a more sustainable way.”
Writes Thompson, “bear in mind that politicians often lose sight of issues that aren’t in front of them all the time. They can end up ignoring even something like climate change, which is possibly the most pressing challenge of our time. So we all need to be bold. Attend a rally, write to your local leaders. If tens of millions of us just wrote to our leaders demanding action on the Arctic and climate change, well – that could change everything.
If you’re going to heed an actor’s warnings on the future ramifications of present ignorance, it’s probably going to be the woman who played Professor Trelawney. That, or Hugh Grant.
