Top 5 Melbourne Spring Fashion Week Events Off The Beaten Track

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week (MSFW) is back for another year, and with such a full program planned we thought we’d saved you the trouble and picked out our top picks of the week. MSFW runs 31 August – 8 September showcasing designers like Alice McCall, Above., Gorman, Life With Bird and Manning Cartell, exhibitions, workshops, a heap of free events and more.

1. Film Screenings of ‘Reflections’
Fashion and film are a curious pairing. When it’s done right, it can be spectacular (see Louis Vuitton) but when it’s done wrong, or even just meh, it can be a spectacular mess (see nearly every other designer). MSFW have taken no such chances with ‘Reflections’ – where fashion and cinema collide with the city of Melbourne and all of its grandeur. In a film that resembles Run Lola Run in high heels, ‘Reflections’ stars multi-tasking extraordinaire Kate Peck and does an excellent job of making Melbourne seem as irresistible and darkly magical as Paris does in any film starring Audrey Tatou. Maybe it’s because Melbourne is a city so steeped in history and art that this Just Seems To Work, or maybe it’s because Kate Peck is an uber babe whose running face could rival Ridiculously Photogenic Guy, ‘Reflections’ is something you should definitely make time to actively seek out.

Screened from Friday 30 Aug – Sunday 8 September at the following locations:

Collins234 Boutique Place – 234 Collins Street, Melbourne 10-8pm

Melbourne Central – 211 La Trobe Street, Melbourne 6pm -9pm

Southgate – 3 Southgate Avenue, Southbank 6pm – 9pm

2. Book Launch: “The Fashionable Cocktail: 200 Fabulous Drinks for the Fashion Set” by Jane Rocca
Well apparently the fashion set are so exclusive these days that they have 200 special cocktails of their very own. And I want in on that (well, the part of me that is a practicing alcoholic does anyway). If you do too, then this book launch might be your ticket to the high life. Or at the very least, a room full of people carrying designer it-bags and plenty of delicious canapés to snack on while you weigh up whether your yearly rent is worth sacrificing for one.

Touche Hombre Private Bar TH2, 233 Lonsdale St, Melbourne, Tuesday 3 September 7 – 9pm
Tickets via Ticketek – $75

3. MSFW: Industry
Whether you’re in the fashion industry, studying fashion or just fashionably curious – MSFW’s Industry Day is the place to be if you want to learn from the seasoned best. With a number of unique events and education taking place across the day, you can go choose your own adventure style, or buy a full day ticket to enjoy it all. Learning is cool!

Melbourne Town Hall, Swanston St, Melbourne, Tuesday 3 September

MSFW: MR
If you like your fashion masculine steeped with a good dose of manliness, then you’ll be pleased to hear that MSFW are – for the first time ever – presenting a dude-focused runway event. Yay for equality. Presenting a mixture of both designer and ready to wear collections, guys will like it for the threads, girls will like it for the eye candy and we’ll all like it cos it’s free. Win win win.

MSFW: Hub – City Square, Free, Thursday 5 September 6pm until late

New Designer Market
Every designer starts somewhere and if you like being the first in line, then the New Designer Market will be the Alexander to your Wang. The place to find the city’s best emerging design talent, this colourful and eclectic pop-up market will showcase the wares of more than a dozen makers and is the perfect opportunity to claim “I saw it first”.

MSFW: Hub, City Square, Free, Sunday 8 September 10-4pm
