Tinder’s Rolling Out 35+ More Inclusive Options For Gender Identification

Dating app overlords, Tinder, have just rolled out a new feature in their app that allows users to identify as a gender that goes beyond the meat & two veg of ‘male’ and ‘female’.

Tinder teamed up with GLAAD to create the inclusive update and, paired with #AllTypesAllSwipes, the app is leading by example for others to follow.

“This update reflects a growing awareness that trans people are part of the fabric of everyday life, which in turn, accelerates acceptance for transgender and gender non-conforming people.” GLAAD‘s Nick Adams said in the group’s media release about the update.

The app will provide a huge 35+ gender options, which means no more umbrella ‘other’ option for transgender, genderfluid, and non-binary folk. Instead, there’s a ‘more’ option, which is also helping to erase the really shit concept of othering minorities. None of that here, please.

The dropdown includes identifiers like transgender, transexual, non-binary, two-spirit, gender questioning, androgynous, agender, transfemme, and transmasculine. (If you’re not 100% sure what these terms mean, Human Rights Campaign have a handy little guide for you to get educated.)
Gender options in pretty much every form, signup, and survey have been a hot topic this year as the flaming pile of hot, wet trash known as the Australian Census kinda tried to do gender diversity this year (but only if you kicked up a bit of a stink).
Seriously, literally every website that requests gender ever, it’s a couple of extra lines of code and the world is a little bit closer to gender equality. Just fkn do it.
