Cats have reaffirmed their reign as Internet Royalty today by winning an online vote to become the latest Monopoly token.
Beating out fellow token nominees the robot, the diamond ring, the helicopter and the guitar in toy maker Hasbro Inc’s Facebook competition, the cat token will take the place of crowd un-favourite, the iron, to represent a new generation of Monopoly players and feline obsessed internet nerds.
“I think there were a lot of cat lovers in the world that reached out and voted,” said Vice President of Hasbro marketing Jonathan Berkowitz.
The Scottie Dog won 29% of the vote for favourite among existing tokens, which also includes the the race-car, the shoe, the thimble, the top hat, the wheelbarrow and the battleship. The Save Your Token Campaign was part of an initiative by Hasbro to keep the almost 80 year old game relevant and engaging.
The cat token will replace the iron on production lines immediately and should be in stores by mid to late 2013.
