Pepper and Pistol’s Autumn Winter 09 collection “The Fashion Of Clowning” (their fourth to date) appropriates baroque circus wear to unleash the cream pie throwing harlequin within.
Made up of design duo Silvia Hillmann and Katrin Wiens (the strategic combination of fashion designer and graphic designer respectively) the Berlin based label’s name is derived from a “German tale that is both scary and amusing and reflects the fact of combining two different elements: Fashion + Graphics to trigger something new and wickedly wonderful”
From ring leader embellished dresses to pantomime prints and over-sized bows Hillmann and Wiens wholeheartedly embrace the clown motif without crossing into the abyss of cringe inducing kitsch. The playful art direction, hair and makeup also follows suit and is almost enough to make you run away from home and join the circus, or at the very least laugh in the face of depression economic or otherwise.
