L’Oreal Expands To China, Buys Back In To Cosmetic Testing On Animals

Cosmetic giant L’Oreal has signed an $843 million contract to expand overseas with the Chinese cosmetic brand with a suspiciously fake sounding name, Magic Holdings International. The move will give L’Oreal a boost in the $32 billion Chinese beauty market; an arguably smart move if you weren’t to consider the fact that Chinese markets, in the exact opposite manner of EU markets, specifically require animal testing of every new cosmetic product.
Because you’re worth it?
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Chinese testing procedures require 72 animals per product, and with a staggering 4000+ products introduced yearly, more than 300,00 animals in China could be effected by the tests, with Cruelty Free International claiming that some animals are killed, or have their eyes dripped with make up ingredients during testing. L’Oreal’s niche brands like The Body Shop will be excluded from the expansion, considering their refusal to allow animal testing in their product development.
It’s a fairly shocking move to find that the world’s largest cosmetic brand will be descending in to seemingly archaic practice in the industry, where the wellbeing of animals are risked for the sake of looking good. As we all firmly understand, cosmetic testing should only be taken out with a shotgun and your wife, it’s only ethical:
