The nominations are in for the 65th Annual Emmy Awards, and as usual, there are some pretty obvious competitors who will fight it out on September 22.
Breaking Bad, Homeland, Mad Men, Game Of Thrones and Downton Abbey all scored spots in the coveted Best Drama Series category; HBO killed it with 108 nominations, clearing the nominations of CBS and NBC combined; Lena Dunham was suitably chuffed about Girls’ five nominations including hers for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series and Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series; and for the first time ever, a series that wasn’t aired on TV—held exclusively online at Netflix—House Of Cards, received the trifecta of nominations with Best Lead Actor, Best Lead Actress and Best Drama Series, signalling a successful shift of shows diverging from tradition and moving online.
However, there were a few things that took us by surprise, least of all the apparently show-stealing American Horror Story, which snagged 17 nominations:
PARKS AND RECREATION SNUBBED
Of course Amy Poehler brought it home with a nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, but aside from the who-cares nomination for Outstanding Sound Mixing, Parks and Recreation is sadly scarce on this year’s 43 page nomination list.
It’s a sad day for Tommy Timberlake/MouseRat/Lil Sebastian/Jerry-hating fans. Parks and Rec screenwriter Megan Amram retweeted this, which really says it all:
Nick Offerman. Adam Scott. Chris Pratt. Rob Lowe. Aubrey Plaza. Rashida Jones. Aziz Ansari.

IS A CONTEST REALLY NECESSARY AGAINST THE RURAL JUROR?
The Rural Juror from 30 Rock is up for best original song, and with that kind of competition, it seems incredibly strange that they bothered to nominate anything else. The other nominations in the category must just be sympathy votes, or perhaps a cruel temptation for Alan Meneken: if his song More Or Less The Kind Of Thing You May Or May Not Possibly See On Broadway from The Neighbors somehow beats The Rural Juror, Meneken will join Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks and Whoopi Goldberg as the 12th E.G.O.T winner. For the love of The Irma Luhrman-Merman murder, let’s hope not.
“I HATE SKYLER WHITE” PROTEST PAGE IS YET TO LOSE IT OVER ANNA GUNN’S BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS NOMINATION
The Skyler White-hating, Breaking Bad-loving fan is a special kind of breed: dedicated fiercely to propelling all manner of hate on a character they inexplicably loathe among a show they eternally love, they know how to troll. Innocent non-Skyler White human Anna Gunn has been nominated for her widely-hated performance as Skyler White, wife to the Meth King Walter White/Heisenberg, but a full-blown protest at the nomination is yet to appear, despite the usual gusto which Skyler haters usually take to their profession. It’s bound to happen soon.
JASON BATEMAN WAS THE ONLY NOMINATED ACTOR FROM ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT
But what about Will Arnett and David Cross?
MICHAEL C HALL BREAKS 5 YEAR LONG NOMINATION STREAK
Michael C Hall, provider of the unnerving, stellar portrayal of Dude who loves to kill other dudes, Dexter Morgan, has broken his 5 year long nomination streak for best lead actor in a drama series. I guess he didn’t look angry enough in the last series? Or did he stop killing dudes? Now Michael C. Hall holds the saddest title ever: Actor with the most nominations in the category, without ever winning. 🙁
