Family Of WA Teen Killed By Shark Says She ‘Died Doing Something She Loved’

The surfer who died following a shark attack at Wylie Bay near Esperance, WA has been identified as 17-year-old Laeticia Brouwer.
Brouwer was surfing at a popular break known as Kelp Beds with her father yesterday when she attacked by a shark just before 4pm WA time.
Brouwer’s mother and two sisters reportedly witnessed the attack from the beach, which saw her pulled under before resurfacing to be taken back into the beach by her father.

Paramedics, police and Marine Rescue treated her at the beach but she later died from her injuries at Esperance Hospital.
The Department of Fisheries has been conducting patrols in waters surrounding the beach and the beach itself has been closed today, with swimmers further advised to avoid entering the water for another two days.
Laeticia and her family are from the suburb of Singleton in Perth.

In a statement, the family said she died doing what she loved:
We are terribly heartbroken and saddened by this tragic accident. We can take comfort that Laeticia died doing something that she loved.

“The ocean was her and her family’s passion. Surf was something that she… would do with her dad and her sisters. Laeticia will be greatly missed by her family, friends and everyone that knew her.

“We can take comfort that she is now in Heaven with the Lord in eternal peace.”
