Bomb Squad Removes Suspicious Package At Melbourne’s Bourke St Memorial

Victoria Police have again cordoned off Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall, after a suspicious package was found at the site of the makeshift memorial for the victims of the January 20 rampage attack.
The public was evacuated and the bomb squad sent in, after the unidentified package was reportedly found in amongst the hundreds of flowers laid out on the steps of the GPO Building on the Elizabeth Street end of the mall.
Police had been working to remove the flowers from the site when the package was found.

A short time ago witnesses on the scene reported that the package had been removed by the bomb squad, and that the area was being cleared by police.

A smoking ceremony conducted by the traditional owners of the land had taken place just prior to the removal of the temporary memorial.

Investigations into the package are on-going, but the area has been declared safe by Victoria Police. The Bourke St Mall is set to reopen imminently.
More on this situation as it develops.
