American comic Amy Schumer just released a new hour-long special on Netflix, titled ‘The Leather Special‘. Despite only being out for a week, it’s currently rated an abysmal one star on the streaming service.
Schumer is not convinced that the poor rating is the result of the special being a dud, though. She’s outlined in a lengthy Instagram post what she believes to be the cause of her single star: trolls.
“Anyone who reported that “viewers aren’t happy” with my special, it would have been cool if you did a moment of research before posting. The alt right organised trolls attack everything I do,” part of the post reads.“They organise to get my ratings down. Meeting in sub Reddit rooms. They tried on my book and movies and tv show And I want to thank them. It makes me feel so powerful and dangerous and brave. It reminds me what I’m saying is effective and bring more interest to my work and their obsession with me keeps me going.”
Schumer has been the target of a lot of gendered vitriol for a long time, and it doesn’t seem unlikely that the cranky lot who have beef with the comedy star would take to a ratings system to express their displeasure.
Meanwhile, Netflix has said recently that it’s changing its rating system from stars to a simple thumbs up/thumbs down. Whether that will have any impact on a dedicated trolling collective like the one Schumer is talking about is hard to say.
