Brazilian footballer Dani Alves is no stranger to racist taunts. Alves, who plays for Barcelona in Spain’s La Liga, has long been subjected to racist jeers from fans, and on one occasion called fighting racism “a lost war” after being subjected to monkey taunts from rival fans.
So when Barcelona rolled into Estadio El Madrigal to take on rival Villareal, the fans once again began taunting Alves with monkey-based racial slurs. Midway through the second half, with Barcelona down 2-1 to Villareal, Alves stepped up to take a corner. And some braindead idiot thought taking the taunts a step further would be a grand idea; they lobbed a banana at Alves, just to put an exclamation point on the whole sordid affair.
A lesser man might have let this affect him; throw him off his game; make him lose a little more faith in humanity. Not Alves. Not this towering pillar of human might. Not this man among men. Where others may have tried to ignore it, Dani Alves bent down, picked up the banana, motherfucking ate it, and played on like it was nothing.
What a goddamned lord.
Bananas, it should be known, contain high levels of potassium and glucose, both proven to help athletes energy levels and performance.
As for the game, Barcelona fought back from that point to defeat Villareal, 3-2.
