Test Batsman Phil Hughes In Critical Condition After Being Struck By A Bouncer

Australian test batsman Phil Hughes has been rushed to hospital in critical condition following distressing scenes at the SCG this afternoon, when he collapsed after being struck in the head by a bouncer.

Hughes, playing in a Sheffield Shield match for South Australia against New South Wales, was on 63 not out when he misjudged a rising delivery from the Blues’ Sean Abbott, collapsing to the pitch shortly after being struck.
Medical personnel performed CPR on Hughes on the pitch, before he was transported to a Medicab. The Medicab then stopped on the boundary line for treatment to continue. Fellow Australian opener David Warner is understood to have been by his side.
At least three ambulances were dispatched to help the stricken player, and an air ambulance was confirmed to have landed at the SCG to bring a specialist team in to assist. He was then transported by road ambulance to hospital.
Hughes had been pushing for selection into the Australian squad ahead of the first test against India in Brisbane beginning on December 4th.
Play in the in-progress match between SA and NSW has been abandoned.
Our thoughts and hopes are with him and his family.
More to come as this story develops.
