Maria Sharapova Hit With Lengthy Ban From Tennis After Failed Drug Test

Tennis legend Maria Sharapova has been hit with a two-year ban from the sport after doping authorities found her guilty of an ‘unintentional’ breach of rules and regulations around performance-enhancing drugs.
She was being investigated for use of Meldonium, an anti-ischemic drug which she maintains was being used legitimately and had only formally been banned this year.
The judgment, which was backdated to the Australian Open this year, means that she will not be able to play tennis until the 2018 Australian Open. Sharapova revealed via a Facebook post that the International Tennis Federation had actually been pushing for a four-year ban – which one might think is overkill, as two years is already basically career-ending.

The ITF spent tremendous amounts of time and resources trying to prove I intentionally violated the anti-doping rules and the tribunal concluded I did not. You need to know that the ITF asked the tribunal to suspend me for four years — the required suspension for an intentional violation — and the tribunal rejected the ITF’s position.

The statement from the tribunal confirms that Sharapova’s use was unintentional, but that this was “no excuse” for not being aware of the drug’s recent prohibition. “She does bear sole responsibility for the contravention, and very significant fault, in failing to take any steps to check whether the continued use of this medicine was permissible,” the statement reads.

Reactions from the tennis world have been mixed. Some are convinced that it was an honest mistake, while others blame Sharapova’s team for not being on the ball and bringing this to her attention:

That last tweet – from former player Michael Russell – sums up the general mood: pro athletes should be aware of what they’re taking, and it’s up to the player and their team to know what’s going on.
Either way, it’s a bad day for tennis. Sharapova is a former world number one, and her career since her Wimbledon victory in 2004 at age 17 has been stratospheric . She’s vowed to fight, so we’ll see how this one plays out.
