Everyone Agrees Paul Gallen Should Have Been Sent Off Last Night

And so the most contentious thing to happen during NSW’s 14-6 victory over the QLD Globetrotters in the State of Origin series opener in Sydney last night was the controversial no-call which saw Blues skipper Paul Gallen (now considered a human-canine hybrid to those north of the border) keep his spot on the field despite a jumper punch, swinging arm and right hook to the face of Queensland prop Nate Myles.

The attack, had it happened during a home and away club fixture, would have at the very least warranted a spell in the sin bin. Instead, it was put on report and Gallen was free to play to the jeers of Queenslanders everywhere. Here’s the incident…

The Blues captain today received a grade two striking charge and will miss at least one NRL match with an early guilty plea. He’d be wise not to fight it. At the time of the fracas former Blues champion and caller Peter Sterling said “It had to be ten in the bin at least,” while his Maroons counterpart Paul Vautin said “If this was a club game, he would have been sent off”.

It’s a sentiment that most of Twitter agreed with.

And QLD’s spirit animal.
