Aussie Athletes Were Robbed In Rio During An Olympic Village Fire Evac

In the latest entry to the growing pantheon of stories about the Rio Olympics which make you go “Ah, I see”, the Australian Olympic team were apparently robbed during a fire evacuation from their lodgings at the athlete’s village.

Two laptops and some team shirts were stolen from the athlete’s rooms while they evacuated the building due a fire alarm, which was triggered by a fire in the building’s basement.
Behold, the athletes waiting outside while their laptops were pilfered:

The Aussie delegation had initially refused to move into their lodgings last Sunday due to safety concerns, but moved in three days later after repairs were made.
Australian chef de mission Kitty Chiller told News Corp that she had warned other Olympic delegations about the possibility of fire. “I spoke to a couple of my colleagues, three or four other NOCs (national Olympic committees) last night, and just said ‘look, check your basement, see what rubbish is still left there’,” she said.
The Games start with the Opening Ceremony on Friday. Hopefully it’ll be smooth sailing by then.
